Loneliness

In declaring loneliness the latest public health epidemic, the U.S. surgeon general stated that “widespread loneliness in the U.S. poses health risk as deadly as smoking up to 15 cigarettes daily, costing the health industry billions of dollars annually.”

 

Loneliness is a subjective feeling of isolation or a lack of connection with others that arises when individuals perceive their social relationships as being inadequate and unsatisfying. Loneliness can occur even among people who are extremely social and emphasizes the point that the quality of our connections is more important than the quantity.

 

Loneliness can have a significant impact on a person’s overall well-being. It can lead to feelings of sadness, anxiety, and low self esteem. Prolonged loneliness is correlated with increased incidences of mental health issues like depression and anxiety, as well as physical health problems such as cardiovascular disease, weakened immune systems, and sleep disturbances.

Youth Empowerment
